Kyle Turns 1! First Birthday Milestone Photography in Seward, Nebraska

This sweet New Years Baby turned one and we celebrated at the Emily Nix Photography studio in Seward, Nebraska, with a smash cake and traditional first year photos! Kyle's sweet mama ordered a simple white smash cake from a local grocery store and topped it with his birthday crown—it could not have been more adorable, or fitting, for this Mr. ONEderful!

For Kyle's first year portraits, his mama brought in three outfits. The first is a traditional blue outfit that made his blue eyes pop. You'll notice he didn't love the shoes... they did make it in to a few photos, but this sweet boy preferred not to be wearing them. So fun!

In addition to his more formal outfit, Kyle had his birthday outfit, which his mama planned to have him wear to his first birthday party, as well as a simple one-piece outfit for his cake smash. When it was time for him to eat his cake, Kyle was so curious at first—just barely touching the cake with his fingers—but that soon turned to serious excitement when he realized he could pick up the WHOLE CAKE at once and dive in that way. It was so fun and perfect for this sweet boy!

A Tip On Ordering Smash Cakes

A note for parents ordering smash cakes for their babies: 5 inch or 6 inch plain round cakes are best, and I suggest getting them frosted in white or light colors. Why? Because baby is sure to get it everywhere, and you may not want it to stain their clothes or face. For families in the Omaha or Lincoln, Nebraska, areas, HyVee and Super Saver both make great smash cake options, or, if you're a baker, you can whip one up yourself!

First birthday milestone photo sessions and cake smash sessions are some of my favorites because they're just plain happy. Some babies love to eat cake, some aren't sure what to do, and some (well, most) end up making a big mess. And I LOVE it. What a perfect way to celebrate a ONEderful first year than to cap it off with photos.
